What Is Claude Cowork

Claude Cowork Is Not a Chat Interface

Understanding the distinction between Claude.ai and Claude Cowork is essential before any deployment decision.

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's desktop application designed specifically for knowledge workers who need an AI agent that operates at the level of tasks, not prompts. While Claude.ai is a browser-based chat interface for individual queries and conversations, Claude Cowork is a persistent, file-aware, tool-connected AI agent running natively on your operating system.

The practical difference is significant. When a user opens Claude Cowork and asks it to "review the Q3 board pack and draft the executive summary," Claude Cowork can access files directly from the desktop, open PDFs, cross-reference documents, execute multi-step analysis, and produce a finished output — all without the user manually copying and pasting anything. This is the agentic capability that makes Claude Cowork relevant to enterprise deployments.

Claude Cowork also ships with skills — pre-built agentic workflows that handle recurring tasks. A finance team might have a skill for monthly variance reports. A legal team might have a skill for contract review and risk flagging. Skills are reusable, shareable within an organisation, and can be built by your own team using the Claude Code agent SDK or procured from the MCP server development service we offer.

Alongside Claude Cowork sits Claude Dispatch — Anthropic's mobile application that lets users monitor and control agents that Claude Cowork has started, receiving progress updates and approving key decisions from a smartphone. The Cowork + Dispatch combination represents a meaningful shift in how knowledge workers interact with AI: you set the task, go to a meeting, and return to a finished output.

Feature Breakdown

Claude Cowork Features for Enterprise Teams

Claude Cowork's feature set is architecturally different from conventional AI assistants. Every capability listed here is production-ready in the 2026 release.

🧩 PLUGINS

Plugin Ecosystem

Claude Cowork's plugin system is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Plugins extend Cowork's capabilities by connecting it to external systems — Salesforce, Jira, SharePoint, Google Drive, DocuSign, and hundreds more. Enterprise teams can also build proprietary plugins using our MCP server development service. Plugins run locally, meaning data never leaves your machine unless the plugin explicitly routes it elsewhere — a critical distinction for regulated industries.

SKILLS

Skills & Reusable Workflows

Skills are saved, reusable agentic workflows within Claude Cowork. A skill encapsulates a multi-step task — the instructions, the context, the tool connections, and the output format — so it can be run repeatedly with one click. Skills can be shared across your organisation, versioned, and managed centrally by an admin. Think of them as macros, but intelligent and capable of judgement within defined parameters.

📱 DISPATCH

Claude Dispatch Integration

Claude Dispatch is the companion mobile app that lets users supervise and interact with Claude Cowork agents running in the background. Users receive progress notifications, can approve or redirect agent decisions mid-task, and view completed outputs from their smartphone. This is the feature that makes genuine "set and forget" workflows viable — you initiate the task on your desktop, monitor it from your phone, and return to a finished result. 🔒 ENTERPRISE CONTROLS

Admin & Governance Layer

Enterprise deployments of Claude Cowork come with centralised admin controls: user provisioning, permission scoping per plugin, activity logging, and policy configuration. Admins can restrict which plugins employees can install, which models they can access, and what data the agent can touch. This is the governance layer that makes Claude Cowork viable for financial services, legal, and healthcare — not just productivity users.

📂 FILE SYSTEM

Native File System Access

Claude Cowork reads, analyses, and produces files directly on your local file system. PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, code files, images — all accessible without manual upload. Claude can read a 200-page procurement contract, compare it against prior versions, flag non-standard clauses, and produce a summary memo, entirely from your local drive. This is the capability that replaces hours of human document work per week, per user.

🤖 MODEL SELECTION

Opus & Sonnet Model Access

Claude Cowork Pro includes access to Claude Sonnet — Anthropic's best balance of performance and speed. Claude Cowork Max includes access to Claude Opus 4 — Anthropic's most capable model, best suited for complex analysis, extended reasoning tasks, and high-stakes document work. Admins can configure which models are available to which user groups, matching model cost to task complexity and keeping per-seat costs predictable.

🔗 CONNECTORS

Pre-Built Connector Library

Claude Cowork ships with a library of pre-built connectors for the most common enterprise tools. These include Gmail and Google Calendar for scheduling workflows, Google Drive and SharePoint for document access, Slack for communication summarisation, and DocuSign for contract routing. Each connector installs as a plugin and can be scoped by admin to specific data sources. We expand on this in our Claude Cowork deployment service.

🧠 CONTEXT

Extended Context Window

Claude Cowork on Opus supports a 200,000-token context window — large enough to hold an entire annual report, a full legal contract portfolio, or a comprehensive project history in a single session. This removes the context fragmentation problem that plagues shorter-context models on enterprise tasks. Long documents are processed in full, not summarised into degraded approximations.

How to Deploy Claude Cowork in Your Organisation

Individual adoption and enterprise deployment are very different problems. The steps below reflect what enterprise deployment actually requires — not the three-click consumer onboarding.

01

Licence Procurement & Plan Selection

Claude Cowork is available on Pro (Sonnet access) and Max (Opus access) plans. Enterprise pricing is negotiated directly with Anthropic. Before procurement, determine which user populations need Opus access — Max seats cost more, and not every knowledge worker needs Anthropic's most powerful model. A tiered approach (Max for analysts, Pro for general users) typically reduces total licensing cost by 30–40% without meaningful productivity impact. Our Claude strategy consulting team helps you model this.

02

Admin Environment Setup

Configure your admin console: SSO integration (SAML 2.0 or OIDC with your IdP), user provisioning via SCIM, and baseline permission policies for plugin installation. Define which connectors your organisation will allow by default and which require IT approval. Set up activity logging to your SIEM if required for compliance. This phase typically takes 2–5 business days with our deployment team engaged.

03

Connector & Plugin Configuration

Install and scope the connectors relevant to your organisation. Each connector needs OAuth authorisation or API key configuration, and admin scoping to define which data sources each user group can access. For proprietary internal systems — your ERP, CRM, or internal knowledge base — this is where custom MCP server development begins. We build the connector; your team maintains it.

04

Skills Library Development

The ROI of Claude Cowork is unlocked when your organisation builds a library of skills tailored to your workflows. Start with the highest-volume, most time-consuming recurring tasks in each function: finance month-end, legal contract review, HR onboarding pack preparation, procurement vendor analysis. Each skill is a one-time investment that saves hours every cycle. Our Claude training workshops teach your team to build and manage these skills independently.

05

User Training & Rollout

A phased rollout is always more successful than a big-bang deployment. Start with a power-user cohort in your highest-value function. Measure adoption, productivity impact, and skill quality. Refine before expanding to the next cohort. We've found that organisations that invest in role-specific training in the first 30 days achieve 3× higher active usage rates at 90 days than those that rely on self-service onboarding alone.

Enterprise Deployment

Enterprise-Grade Security & Governance for Claude Cowork

Deploying Claude Cowork at enterprise scale requires more than an admin console. It requires a governance framework that satisfies your security team, legal team, and the regulators they report to.

Data Residency & Privacy

Claude Cowork processes data using Anthropic's inference infrastructure. Conversation data is not used to train models for enterprise accounts. Your legal team will need to review Anthropic's data processing addendum; we can advise on typical enterprise DPA requirements and flag where negotiation is warranted. Plugins that connect to external services have their own data flows — we scope and document each one during deployment.

Access Controls & Permissions

The enterprise admin console supports role-based access control for plugins, models, and data sources. A procurement analyst should not have the same connector access as an HR manager. Fine-grained permission scoping prevents accidental data exposure and creates an auditable access record for compliance purposes. This is one of the first things we configure in our Claude security and governance engagements.

Activity Logging & Audit Trail

Enterprise Claude Cowork deployments support activity log export to your SIEM — Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel, Datadog, or equivalent. Every agent action, plugin call, and file access can be logged with timestamp and user attribution. This creates the audit trail that regulated industries require. Log schema and export configuration is part of our standard deployment scope.

Incident Response & Controls

Define your incident response procedure for AI-related events before you need it. What constitutes a reportable event? Who owns the response? What is the containment procedure? We help you build the AI-specific incident response addendum to your existing playbook — aligned with your existing InfoSec and business continuity frameworks — as part of any full deployment engagement.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Claude Cowork

What is the difference between Claude Cowork and Claude Code?

Claude Cowork is designed for knowledge workers — analysts, lawyers, HR professionals, finance teams — who need an AI agent that handles document-heavy, structured workflows. Claude Code is designed for software engineers and technical teams who need an AI agent that writes, reviews, refactors, and manages code within a development environment. The two products are complementary and can be deployed in parallel across different user populations. See our Claude Code guide for the full technical breakdown.

Can we build custom plugins for proprietary internal systems?

Yes — and this is often the highest-value part of any enterprise Claude Cowork deployment. Custom plugins are built using the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and can connect Claude Cowork to any internal system that has an API or can be wrapped in one. We build these through our MCP server development service. Typical integrations include proprietary ERP systems, internal knowledge bases, compliance databases, and legacy transaction systems.

Is our data used to train Anthropic's models?

For enterprise accounts, no — Anthropic's enterprise terms explicitly exclude customer data from model training. This is a standard enterprise data processing addendum (DPA) provision. Consumer accounts operate under different terms. This distinction is important for any organisation in a regulated industry and is one of the key reasons to procure enterprise licensing rather than Pro or Max individual seats.

What operating systems does Claude Cowork support?

Claude Cowork is available for macOS and Windows. Linux support is on Anthropic's roadmap but not yet publicly announced. For organisations with significant Linux desktop environments, the browser-based Claude.ai remains the primary interface, though it lacks the full agentic capabilities of the native Cowork application.

How does Claude Dispatch work alongside Cowork?

Claude Dispatch is the mobile companion application for Claude Cowork. When a user starts a long-running agentic task in Cowork — say, a multi-hour document analysis across a 50-document contract portfolio — Dispatch sends push notifications to their smartphone at key decision points. The user can approve, redirect, or pause the agent from their phone. This is particularly valuable for tasks that run during meetings or off-hours. See our full Claude Dispatch product guide for details.

How long does a typical enterprise deployment take?

A focused departmental deployment — say, a 50-person finance team — typically takes 4–6 weeks: one week for admin setup and SSO configuration, one to two weeks for plugin and connector configuration, one week for skills development, and one to two weeks for training and rollout. A full-organisation deployment to hundreds or thousands of users typically runs 3–6 months. We scope the exact programme in our initial strategy call.
