AI fluency is not about knowing how to build AI systems. It's about knowing enough to use them well, supervise them responsibly, and make sound decisions about when to trust them. The most common AI fluency gap is an inaccurate mental model of Claude's capabilities. Both overconfidence (trusting Claude on things it's unreliable for) and underconfidence (not using Claude for things it's excellent at) reduce your productivity and introduce risk. Here's the honest picture.

Responsible Use: Your Obligations
Using Claude at work comes with obligations that your organisation's acceptable use policy defines. AI fluency includes understanding these โ not just because your employer requires it, but because they reflect genuine risks that can affect you, your colleagues, and your customers.
The most important obligation is confidentiality. Do not share personal data about colleagues, customers, or third parties with Claude unless your organisation's deployment explicitly authorises it and has the appropriate data agreements in place. If you're using a Claude Enterprise deployment with data processing agreements, your IT team can tell you what's permitted. When in doubt, anonymise before pasting. A client contract review that removes the client's name and identifying details is almost as useful as the original for most analytical purposes.
The second key obligation is accuracy verification. When Claude's output will be relied on for a decision, communicated to a customer, or used in a regulated context โ verify it. This is not about distrusting Claude; it's about maintaining the human oversight that responsible AI governance requires. Claude is a capable assistant, not an authoritative source.
Third: attribution and transparency. In most organisations, it's acceptable to use Claude to draft a document that you then review, refine, and take responsibility for. It's not acceptable to represent AI-generated analysis as your own expert judgement without the review and judgement. The line is about whether you've actually exercised professional judgement over the output โ not about how much of the initial text came from Claude.
The test for responsible Claude use: Would you be comfortable if your manager, client, or regulator knew exactly how you used Claude to produce this output โ and would they agree it was appropriate? If yes, proceed. If not, reconsider your approach.
Working with AI Agents, Not Just Chatbots
In 2026, Claude is deployed in increasingly agentic configurations. Claude Cowork doesn't just answer questions โ it reads your files, executes multi-step workflows, sends communications, and takes actions across connected systems. Claude Dispatch allows you to orchestrate AI agents from your phone. Custom agents built by your IT team may be operating autonomously in your organisation's workflows right now.
Working with AI agents requires a different kind of fluency than working with chatbots. With a chatbot, every output is reviewed before it affects anything. With an agent, actions can happen โ emails sent, documents modified, data processed โ before you see a summary. AI fluency in an agentic context means: knowing what actions your AI tools can take, understanding what triggers those actions, reviewing summaries of agentic activity for anomalies, and knowing how to pause or override an agent when something unexpected happens.
If your organisation is deploying agentic Claude capabilities, your line manager or IT team should brief you on the specific tools in your environment and their capabilities. The general principle: agents should have the minimal access needed to do their job, and you should have clear visibility into what they've done. If you don't have that visibility, ask for it.
